| Architect's Bio |
| Arthur Hills,
a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, has designed more than
120 golf courses over a distinguished thirty-three year career. Educated at Michigan
State University and the University of Michigan with degrees in horticulture and landscape
architecture, Hills takes a traditional approach to golf course architecture. His
reputation rests on the overriding sense of environmental responsibility that he brings to
his playable yet challenging course designs. "We try to build a course that relates
very carefully to the land," Hills says. "We also keep in mind the strategy of
golf and relate the requirements of the game to the elements that provide beauty on a golf
course - textures and colors, shadowing and framing."
In keeping with his devotion to the traditions of golf course architecture, Arthur
Hills has been retained as a consultant on many of America's classic courses: Oakland
Hills, Inverness, Oakmont, Crystal Downs, Chevy Chase and Siwanoy.
Other Hills' courses with national reputations include: The Hyatt Hill Country Resort
in San Antonio; The Champions in Lexington, Kentucky; and the two Arthur Hills' signature
courses on Hilton Head, The Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Dunes Resort, The Arthur Hills
Course at Palmetto Hall Plantation. More recently, Bay Harbor in Michigan, and the new
Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Links in California.
"We always strive to design as good a golf course as we can," Hills
concludes, "every time we have the opportunity."
